Disable your antivirus when downloading the map installer. Other members have reported their antivirus also behaving like that. Some antivirus programs are erroneously flagging the MfM-Garmin file as being a virus but it's not.

New to GPS..got a Nuvi 2555LMT from US and preloaded into device internal storage with US map.
Now, I downloaded/transfer the gmapsupp.img into a microSD card in Garmin folder..When I start up GPS with the card in slot, I always get the US map displayed..even if I had selected Malfreemaps 120305 only under myMaps settings. Why is it so and how to get resolve?

Has your unit ever got a satellite lock yet since it arrived in this region? From your description, it seems like it has not.

Leave your unit on in a location with a direct view to the sky until it displays the local area in the map. It might take some time (sometimes > 10 mins) before the unit "gets its bearings" in a new location.

I would like to ask a dumb question, but what is preventing the creation of a zip file for users to just download the latest updated map instead of having to install Mapsource etc?. It gets very confusing after reading all the instructions for the ordinary person who just wants to use the map.

The download is a zipped exe file. You don't need Mapsource to generate the map. Which part of the instruction do you have problem with?

Please let us know.

Step "a" says to install Mapsource. The step that really got me is step 9, which seems to suggest I must either use the MFM map generator or Mapsource - after making the map. Using Mapsource seems complicated from the instructions but if don't choose to use Mapsource, where is the own map generator found? Is it compulsory to install Mapsource?

Great to know it is a zip file. I guess the answer I am looking for is whether I can just unzip into my PC harddisk for transfer to my Garmin SD card? Hope the answer is "yes".

Thank you for your patience.

The map generator is part of the execution of the installer to make it easy for newbie to get the map.......

The second part of the query is No, if I'm not wrong.

Anyway, the installer will just plant the map files into a location on your harddrive, no mapsource needed.....and the map generator will put the generated map called gmapsupp.img in the same directory.... After the installation is completed, go there, copy the file to your SD card. Done.

Hi,

All my PCs are installed with Mapsource so I can't run the install to test.... please don't ask me to uninstall... If my memory serves me right you can run the downloaded exe file and it will prompt if you want to generate Gmapsupp.img. Answer yes and it will generate the map file and stores it in C:\Garmin\Malfreemaps or something like that...

Hope this helps... Cheers!

Thanks for the quick response. I will not install Mapsource but download the zip file and see where it takes me.
