You are right bro zuree,

Whether you consider it saving money in view of the impending recession or as a free gift for Chinese New Year, either way, it can't be bad. \:D/

I screwed up in upgrading my FW (Nuvi 200, US version, FW ver 3.40, device : 0660) using the updater. Here is what happened:
- tried the first 2 methods described by Jason, does not work. 1st method : didn't see any messages after holding the power button for 30 seconds. 2nd method : device not recognized by updater.
- tried 3rd method, got into the diag menu, connect the GPS and updater recognized the GPS. Pressed OK, GPS screen display message "Erasing FW ver 3.40 (or something like that). After than there is an error mentioned that there is an error with the garmin application (btw, mapsource was launched automatically - I believe after pressing OK). Unfortunately I didn't copy the log file and just close it. Now my GPS shows message LOADER LOADING.... and stay in that screen. Nothing can be done now as the unit is not responding at all, I can even power if off, and my PC can't detect the unit as well.

What should I do now? How can I recover my GPS?

Update : Managed to RESET my GPS and everything is back in order again.

Bro sentry, firstly please specified your location? maybe other nearby brother can help.

I just did my update, I think you power on and hold it for few second and faster connected your USB cable, start updater and choose usb connection and ok.

The above process have to completed as fast as possible, you can not let the computer detected it as data transfer.

I also try few time and i think 1st method is working.

Thanks Chuah for the response, I'm from Penang. I managed to reset my GPS and it is working again, was thinking of letting the battery fully drained and try something but suddenly remembert he RESET button which help to solve the problem.

Anyway, had another attempt just now using method 2 and successfully run the updater and everything goes smoothly. Upon reboot, there is a prompt if I wanted to proceed with the 'upgrade' as it older :-? than the installed version. Proceed with the 'upgrade' only to find out that nothing has changed - my FW is still version 3.40, still need to hold ~ 10 seconds to get to the tracking menu.

Should I upgrade to firmware version 5.00 first before running the updater?

Bro, Just read this the downloaded files. Maybe it help.

With some Nüvis, the "LOADER message" will NOT appear inn pre-boot mode.
1) Hold the POWER button and wait around 10 seconds
2) Connect the Nüvi to your computer
3) Wait 2 seconds
4) Start updater.exe, select "USB" device
5) as soon as updater begins to load data to your Nüvi,
release to POWER button

Number 5) must happen AT LATEST 30 seconds after 1). Or the calibration screen will appear.

My is updated for version 5.00 and it work.

Hi nazri14,

I am faced similiar issue, which webupdate cannot detect my nuvi unit but in windows explorer it can detect it as a drive.
So I reboot a few times and unplug and plug back, finally webupdate able to detect it. If webupdate can detect it then the updater will detect it as well.

Suggest: If can't detect try reboot or unplug and plug back until it work.
Regards,
Chee Loong (Nuvi 1350)

Hi Bro sentry,

I am from Penang too and will help if necessary.

All the remedial procedures I read recommended updating in the pre-boot mode. Hence I think your choice should be Method 2.

I think your GPSr is back to v3.40, the same state before you tried to patch so all you need to do is to patch again using method 2 and make sure you select you Nuvi as a UBS device and not a serial device.

I suspect that when you did a reset, your unit was restoring the older v3.40 so asked you whether you wished to proceed with the older (v3.40). Since you selected yes, so you were 'upgraded' with the older v.3.40.

I like to caution again that those who have NEVER connected their GPSr units to their PC before or are not using the same PC they connected before, they should first connect and backup all files as a precautionary measure as well as give their PC a chance to have the necessary drivers installed. This applies to Bro Nazri14 too. What bro Chee Loong recommended is also good as upgrading a Nuvi has been reported to very often be a hit-or-miss affair. Too bad Garmin made our Nuvis this way.

If I were you, I would try to patch again using method 2 as I would have nothing to lose but everything to gain. Please report both success (and how you did it) or problems (how you did it and what went wrong) for the benefit of other bros who are contemplating to do the patch. Since the patch will update your unit to v5.00 any way, to update it to v5.00 first seem to be superfluous. But there is no harm; only a bit extra effort and in the process may even benefit you by ensuring that your PC has the drivers installed.

Yes, bro zom, this is only for 200 or 2x0 and 200W or 2x0W but not the 205 which already has their own native trip log. Too bad if the native trip log of the 205 is not as good as the hidden tracklog feature in the other 2x0 units but again that is how Garmin made it and there is nothing much we can do at the moment unless somebody finds the need and a way to patch a 205 and provided it has the hidden feature in the first place.
