Guide: Howto make MFM SRTM for 7x5 :)

1) Get the SRTM (WM and EM) files

2) Install it as standalone in SEPARATE DIRECTORIES. (Example SRTM-WM and SRTM-EM)
2a) Select No contour polygon or coloured polygons.5)

3) I am using command line version of gmaptools, (gmt, GNU/Linux edition :) ). Same options with gmt.exe (MS-DOS/Windows command-line version)

4) Create new map by joining all img files in WM and EM directories, to filename (example) mfm_srtm.img
gmt -j -m "MFM-SRTM-MY" -o mfm_srtm.img -f 885,1 \directory\to\SRTM-WM\600050*.img \directory\to\SRTM-EM\6*.img

5) Make all maps transparent

Code: Select all

gmt -w -t mfm_srtm.img

6) Now check...
gmt -i mfm_srtm.img

This is result from my GNU/Linux.

Code: Select all

$ gmt -i mfm_srtm.img
gmt v0.4.2.1890n   (C) AP
File:           mfm_srtm3.img, length 128131072
Header:         12.07.2009 16:42:16, DSKIMG, xor 00h
Mapset:         MFM-SRTM-MY

Map              length s-f  CP    prio  PID   FID  name
 60005000 MPC     49116  3  1252   26  T   1   885  MFM WM Outline
 60005010 MPC  15185038  3  1252   26  T   1   885  MFM SRTM 10m Contours (N) v1.02
 60005020 MPC  20825875  3  1252   26  T   1   885  MFM SRTM 10m Contours (S) v1.02
 60005100 MPC     61441  3  1252   26  T   1   885  MFM EM Outline
 60005110 MPC  30998825  3  1252   26  T   1   885  MFM-SRTM 10m Contours (SWK-N) v1.00
 60005120 MPC  30950455  3  1252   26  T   1   885  MFM-SRTM 10m Contours (SWK-S) v1.00
 60005130 MPC  29923615  3  1252   26  T   1   885  MFM-SRTM 10m Contours (SBH) v1.00
 MAPSOURC MPS       549  1

Data MPS
 V: MFM-SRTM-MY (0)
 F: PID 1, FID 885, MFM-SRTM-MY

7) Copy the mfm_srtm.img to garmin_drive as nuvi accepted map filenames, To be safe, backup all map files first. I am using external SD, so and I copied the file as SD:\Garmin\gmapsupp.img

8) ENJOY your SRTM in nuvi:)

Conclusions: The SRTM not running well in nuvi due to the original FID is HIGHER than MFM map's. . The steps create map file with new and lower FID. and make it Transparent (optional) . IMHO, nuvi wil prioritized lower FID in map display, but the nuvi 7x5 seem to be neglecting the display or masking the higher FID maps.

I hope this steps helpful. :) Distribute and share this with others :).

Thank you.

I personally feel that Sg/my firmware is still too basic, unlike TWN firmware which has all the essential stuff like road name display just above menu.. and afew more others. Further more MFM doesn't support 3d and lane assist at the moment. Malsing maps aren't as detailed as MFM... therefore im still sticking with TWN firmware. Sg/my firmware ain't up to standard.

I hope MFM will come out with at least lane assist anytime soon. better yet 3d buildings.. but highly unlikely unless they are able to rip from sg/my preloaded 3d buildings data.

Tried out Sing/Mal firmware 2.10 for the last couple of days and basically agreed with both bahathir and mightyboo that TWN2.70 offers more features and in a way more advanced firmware. Somehow, what I fancy about this Sing/Mal FW2.10 is the unit displays more road/building names when navigating as to compare with both TWN and US/EU.

Image
(P/S:..as for the 3D building, considering the preloaded building view can be used with any map incl. MFM and any FW, why should we waste MFM resources hehehe  )

TIPS for Sing/Mal Firmware 2.10 - Do a hard reset then select Taiwan as the locales for additional POI menus. See screen shots below:

Extra 1: 1000 Company (for nearest office buildings)

Extra 2: 3C Shop (for nearest computer shop, I assume)

IMHO, the MYSG210 a intermediate SW between US360 and TWN270. For users just want simple setup, and also for users who REALLY want to use the JCVs, the MYSG210 should be the best for them. This is what the future US/EU SW should looks like. But, to users that really like performaces, can use the TWN270, like me :).

Don't be scared. It is just a STRAIGHT FORWARD thing with command line. Mmm. you may use the GUI gmaptool, wgmaptool, with I am not familiar with. But the basic is there...
