Hi sifu

For proximity alert:

1. Whats the difference between single tone and continous tone

2. Any ways one can customise what alerts to have an audio on? Exampe - me thinks too many junction and intersection alerts, kind of nuisance. But I need the sharp bend alerts and speed zone, school zones etc.

Frustrated buying Garmin Nuvi 1460

Postby student » Tue Dec 01, 2009 4:39 pm

hi all;

I'm newbie here, just buy Nuvi 1460 with preloaded MFM, MSM & City Navigator. I have update MSM & MFM maps to current version as in MFM site & Gamin.sg too. I happy with this toys and prefer to tick MFM map only due to complete & up to date map, untick MSM map & City Navigator due to uncompleted map and always boot-up when entering toll plaza & a few more bugs that I not understand why they didnt update or removed those bugs.

Last weekend I didn't even use or on my device coz i just lepak at home, on the monday morning i try to on but hang on Garmin image, just stuck ther. I call company where buy it at cheras, they ask me to press button on & hold for 10 second, i do but no luck. I call them back they ask me to send back the device so i agree. I when to the company and explain to the guys there and feel very Frustrated with the answer.. "dont put MFM map got a lot of problem just use map from garmin.sg", ok i accept my fault but MFM ver. MFM-Garmin-091102 is already inside the device when I checked infront of this guys, i just update to current version who care. I'm very simple, when I sent it for repairing, repairing humbly do not complain about other thing that is your problem.

I don't care about his business, but i have a wright to use the map that chose & prefer. There anyone here who can tell me where there is the fact that only state maps from garmin.sg (MSM) only can be installed in equipment garmin product. I learn something, i should post here and ask where to buy gps device which good service & not bias. I feel Frustrated & regret after buying Garmin Nuvi 1460, better I remain with my lovely Nuvi 250 & 205w.

sorry for long story.. :peace: :rox:

hi student

thanks for sharing, sorry to hear that you had that problem with nuvi 1460. in fact all of us have the same problem whether we use 255W or 1460. i'm afraid i can't give you the technical explanation why this happened, i'll leave that to the sifu here but we do is to put MFM map on a SD card - this is especially true for 1460. for some reason, the firmware/software for this particular model (malaysian) is written in such a way that it won't read MFM map but "hang" your unit if you put MFM map inside the device at the system or garmin folder.

but if you either put the map into a Map folder (which you create) at the root directory (same level as garmin folder) or in a SD card, it will work very well without any problem.

however you need to remember that you can only use 1 map at a time, having all 3 maps (as you do) checked or only 2 maps checked (especially msm and mfm) will lead the unit to "hang" (as in being unresponsive to touch ). i was told by aeco that this might be due to the similarity (same) in format of both mfm and msm map (because..well both maps were done based on the same concept by the same founder(s)...).

aeco would have advised you to only use msm and leave cn navigator uncheck because this would cause the mapping on the display to overlap, your car icon to 'drive' outside the designate route, conflict routing, disabled or redundant POIs, etc.

i solved the "conflict" for my 255W by simple changing the file extension of the msm map so that it resides in the system but cannot be read. i don't delete original files in the system.

and pls, backup all your files and folders for each time you update your map (msm) or firmware (garmin). but you'd find that GPX folder in your 1460 cannot be back up at all - that's how it was built. no two ways about it. just backup your favourites with mapsource and you'd be fine.

hope this helps.

from the way you wrote, i gather you bought it from distributor's hq?

hi thomashley;

Thank you very much for reply and i take your advise as my guide for future handling of my 1460. FYI, I dont mind to have with map in my device coz what I want is detail & update as what MFM do, but if the seller keep telling me to use this bla.. bla.. bla.. map good and this MFM map give problem to the devices and then that is the stupid thing & bad advise that i hear. If there is state in Garmin web site write something only map from garmin sg (MSM) can be use, then I prefer to buy other brand of GPS.

Funny thing is the guys didn't even think to tell me when use default map can cause your device reboot when entering toll plaza, when i post on web they suggest there are so many taici answer, at the end ask me email to garmin. 1st day driving which default map + city navigator feel regret to buy 1460 coz alot of problem; exit toll duta still with a very old road, that why i prefer MFM map to install ini my device.

Pls advise me with device should i have more comfortable & compatible with this advance MFM. :prayer: :tq:

no need to " :prayer: :prayer: " , we all learn and share equally here. what i've told you i've condensed from the advice of all the sifus here.

MFM is a good map. The best :rox:

assuming you haven't done so (if you have i beg your indulgence), go back to the beginning of this thread, you'd find some pretty good advice and tips.

bet you'd find the answers to your dilemma.

i'm using mfm with my 1460. no problem.

good luck and have fun.

as for the rest of your questions (me think i left a lot unanswered), over to the rest of the sifu brothers here.

Yah, the auto-zoom feature is really irritating.

By the way, the Nuvi 1350 should be similar to the 1460? Anyway, I tried to load a map to my friend's newly purchased 1350 but when I connected the Nuvi to my notebook, I could not see the usual img map files in the device Garmin folder. No gmapprom.img or gmapsupp.img or even gmapbmap.img. But the device had pre-loaded Garmin Singapore map working.

Is there something I missed? The device's battery power was low. So, if the maps should be there, I will go take a look again.

For 1460, Maps in Main Memory is /system folder and for SD card /garmin ( only gmapsupp.img ) or /map ( any name.img )

Thanks. Is there a list somewhere of the permitted file names in /system folder? What about the map folder in SD card? No limit to number of maps there?

Main Memory /system recognises gmapprom.img, gmapprom1.img, gmapsupp.img
SD card /garmin only recognizes 1 file gmapsupp.img
SD card /map limit of SD card memory

I played around with my friend's Nuvi 1350 last night. I assume the user interface is similar to 1460. I find it so hard to use. The menu and back buttons are not obvious. The + and + keys are so small and so close to one another. And whenever I locate a place, a label pops up and obscures the immediate vicinity. Tried to set location to another country but had to try many times before I was successful. Scrolling the map proved to be tricky.

My initial impression is that my old Nuvi 200 is way much better to use. I hope I am wrong since these are the units now available.
